 BUILDING WORKS 2010

18th March 2010

Dear Parents & Carers,

The Governors promised to let you know how we would minimise disruption in the school once the exciting project to refurbish the classrooms for Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 begins.

The planned 12 week schedule will commence during the Easter holiday and will be completed before the start of the new school year in September. The plans will be on display on the notice board at the Victoria Rise school entrance.

The work will be supervised by the school’s architect, Julian Davies, who designed the refurbishment. He will work closely with Liz Divall and the Governors. All personnel working on the site will have been security checked to best protect the safety of our pupils and staff.

The first visible signs of the refurbishment will be that the gate beside the nursery building will be widened to allow access for trucks to deliver materials and remove rubble and will become the contractors’ site entrance. Therefore all access to the school and nursery will be from the Victoria Rise entrance only.

While the work is in progress, a strip of the top playground will be safely cordoned off to store building materials and pupils will be kept clear of it.

During the holiday two Portakabin classrooms and a toilet block will be installed in the lower playground for Reception and Year 1 to occupy during the Summer term.

A wall will then be built between the existing ‘Yellow Area’ and the Year 2 classroom so that dust and noise to Year 2 are kept to a minimum. All health and safety regulations will be complied with; noisy demolition work will happen outside of school hours wherever possible.

The new Reception and Year 1 classrooms should have been completed by the end of the Summer term; the Year 2 classroom will be refurbished over the Summer holiday; and the top and lower playgrounds restored for use by 1st September.

From the beginning of next term we will be upgrading school security in line with new legislation for the safeguarding children.

Measures we will be introducing from the start of the Summer term onwards include:

  • All Macaulay staff will wear school identification badges

  • Visitors to the school will be required to sign in and out and wear identification (this includes parent volunteers, PTA and Governors)

  • All staff will be instructed to challenge any persons without identification

To comply with the legislation:

  • Parents will not be allowed access to the school building without prior permission

  • Parents must only enter the building by the door opposite the school office

  • Only parents delivering children to Breakfast Club or with prearranged appointments will be allowed into the building before 9.00am

  • Only once the children have been taken into class, may parents then come into the office reception area to pay dinner money etc.

Please do not ask children to release external gates, nor to open doors to let you in.

The safety of pupils and staff is our priority and I would like to thank you in advance for assisting us in our endeavours to keep them safe.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the Governors via email at talk-to-governors@macaulay.lambeth.sch.uk or Mrs. Divall.

Yours sincerely,

Andrew Caesar-Gordon

Chair of Governors
